Team India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni may be ducking bouncers from Caribbean pacers but back home his cheque for civic tax has bounced.
One of the highest income tax payers of the state, Dhoni has landed in trouble as his cheque for Rs 645 in favour of the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) as holding tax has been retuned by the bank. According to Section 35 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, an FIR can be lodged against a depositor if his or her cheque bounces. However, the RMC seems reluctant to lodge a case against Dhoni describing it as a case of human error and oversight.
The money, which was to be paid for Dhoni's house on Airport Road, has to be deposited annually to the civic body as holding property tax. The cheque was signed by Dhoni and was deposited by RMC on March 16. But, the SBI returned the cheque on Thursday citing "insufficient funds".
